As the old saying goes, "I am strong, I am invincible".. and yes, you are woman! It was a long time coming, but indeed big shoulders are back.. and with a vengeance. It all started with a little fashion house called Balmain (that's an understatement!) when Jennifer Connelly wore this fabulous green sequin mini dress from the runway. This turned into full-blown Balmainia in the celebrity world over the summer. And you know it's only a matter of time before the real world catches up with the celebrity world. Welcome to Fall 2009, and a world of big shoulders!
The easiest way to wear this trend is with a jacket, simply throw it over your skinny jeans, and you're pretty much there (add a pair of statement ankle boots and you're very there!). If you prefer something more casual, there are some fabulous new long-sleeve tees & jersey tops with statement shoulders as well.

Ruffles & frills seem to be the trend that keeps on giving! They're still as hot this season as they were in the summer, but they have been updated a little. Gone are the bold & busy romantic ruffles, replaced by smaller ruffle accents, structured ruffles (think geometric) and even sprinkled on shoes & handbags.
While you can definitely wear ruffles in the daytime, I wanted to bring readers a set of evening ruffles & frills, as it's important to keep your evening wear updated for the new season. And there is such a fun variety of evening items, it was deserving of it's own category!
The new ruffle-accent ankle boots are a must-have as the weather is starting to turn - there isn't much wear left in your strappy sandals (unless it's a formal event). If you're heading out for a fun dinner, and need/want to dress up, ruffle boots will provide the right kick to your footwear, with jeans, skirt, or even a dynamite metallic dress! More below..

If you follow celebrity trends, you will have spotted Cameron Diaz attending the 2009 Teen Choice Awards in a fabulous pencil dress by Alexander McQueen. And Rene Zellweger appeared on Good Morning America wearing her designer of choice, Carolina Herrera. It's pretty obvious what these two celebs (and dresses!) have in common.. they're both elegant, sophisticated & gray in color.
This a trend brought on by the return of retro glam - a throwback to those stylish women spotted on Mad Men, a time when pencil skirts & little white gloves were au courant. The modern 2009 version is elegant, sure, but also a little more edgy. Cameron's dress, which happens to be online over at Neiman Marcus (link below) has a surprising little zipper accent on the collar.

This is a trend that never really goes away, and to quote my fav fashion designer "animal prints and textures have been around since man (and women too) started wearing animal skins.. or as I like to say... when people started to get dressed". Check out Franco Mirabelli here, the author of that quote - and stay tuned for the return of the AskFranco! column here at ShoppingTheTrend.com
The leopard print trend for Fall 2009 is varied, including the items, color, texture and even the type of animal. And speaking of color, you name it, there will be leopard in it! Blue, like Lanvin's fabulous blue leopard print - or even pink. Check out Molly Sims in her fabulous Notte by Marchesa pink animal print sequin dress over on our Celebrity Edition.
